Disappointment with God

In Disappointment with God, Yancey tackles the questions caused by a God who doesn't always do what we think he's supposed to do. Insightful and deeply personal, Yancey points to the odd disparity between our concept of God and the realities of life. Why, if God is so hungry for relationship with us, does he seem so distant? Why, if he cares for us, do bad things happen? What can we expect from him after all? Yancey answers these questions with clarity, richness, and biblical assurance.

Winner of the 1989 ECPA Gold Medallion Book Award in Inspirational.

AC21DOJ DISCLAIMER: While Philip Yancey writes about some profound theological concepts, he is not a theologian. In his own words, he writes "as a pilgrim, not an expert." His writing reflects a nonjudgmental, humble willingness to learn from others. His writing style is warm and engaging, and his thorough research results in  many beneficial insights. All that said, not everyone will agree with every word he writes.

The Doctrine of the Christian Life

"This volume will deal mostly with ethics, but also with a number of other subjects, grouped around the general title The Doctrine of the Christian Life. The ethics course I taught at Westminster Seminary had that title, but it was James Hurley, as I recall, who suggested to me that the Christian life was much more than ethics. The Christian life is not only a matter of following rules of morality, but a dynamic experience: living in the fallen world, in fellowship with the living God. So in this book I will discuss not only ethics (the normative perspective), but also the culture in which we live (the situational perspective) and the resources of redemption on which we draw daily (the existential perspective)." -- from the author's preface

The Encyclopedia of Prayer and Praise

This book brings together some of the most helpful prayers and teaching about prayer of the past two millennia, offering a vast collection of over 5,000 prayers and writings about prayer. Although it does include hundreds of contemporary prayers, its focus is on the rich and often neglected heritage of classic Christian prayers.

Prayers are organized by theme and occasion, to make it easy to find a particular prayer. There are also indexes of first lines; subjects; and authors and sources. All prayers are addressed to one of the Trinity. Authors range from Abelard and Ambrose through Wesley and Zwingli.

The second part of the Encyclopedia offers over seventy extracts from classic teachings on prayer and praise, as well as prayer collections, stories about prayer and people who prayed, and prayers to be prayed with children.

Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?

In his most powerful book since What's So Amazing about Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey probes the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect -- the very heartbeat -- of your relationship with God: prayer. In theory, prayer is the essential human act, a priceless point of contact between you and the God of the universe. In practice however, prayer is often frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? explores the mysterious intersection where you and God meet and relate. Writing as a fellow pilgrim, Yancey explores the questions surrounding prayer that you may wonder about but not know how to express. Above all, Yancey shows you how to pray to a God who sees what lies ahead of you, knows what lies within you, and who invites you into an eternal partnership with Him -- through prayer.

True Spirituality

After serving as a pastor for over a decade, Francis Schaeffer - founder of L'Abri Fellowship - found himself wrestling with deeply perplexing questions like these. He was tired of not seeing results in his own spiritual life and others'. He found himself talking about Christianity, but not living it. So, as a pastor, he decided to "start at the beginning" - go back to agnosticism - and reexamine his Christian faith. "Did Christianity really make any difference in my life?"

This book is the result of Schaeffer's honest search for answers. When the book was published thirty years ago, it shook the Christian world. Young people flocked to L'Abri, his spiritual retreat center in the Swiss Alps. Today, it's a classic book on understanding what real Christianity is all about - what it means to follow Jesus moment by moment.
