In his State of the Union message on Wednesday night, President Obama chastised the Supreme Court -- the members of which were present and seated in the House chambers. Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel suggests the president can disagree all he wants with the court, but says it is inappropriate during the annual speech.

Staver says the high court actually got it right in rejecting part of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law and resuscitated the First Amendment, breathing life back into free speech. Cameras focused on the justices when Obama made his comment.

"Samuel Alito was seen to be actually saying 'That's not true' when Obama said that the Supreme Court decision will open up the floodgates for special interests," notes the Liberty Counsel founder. "Samuel Alito, Jr., who was in the majority decision, said 'That's not true.' [And] in fact, it's not true." (See related YouTube video)

Staver says it is reminiscent of a similar incident during another speech by the president. "It's the lesser version of what Congressman Joe Wilson did during the joint session last year when healthcare was [being] discussed and he said [aloud] 'You lie,'" he recalls. "In fact Obama lied then -- and he lied in this particular situation now."

Staver concludes the president was completely out of line by what he said -- and wrong in his ultimate conclusion.
